May 20-21, 2012

The first ASCC High Performance Driving School of 2012 will be held during the long weekend on Sunday May 20th and Monday 21st, 2012. This session is open to anyone who wants to learn some of the more advanced techniques and track safety to qualify for a Lapping card or Time Attack license for the 2012 season. Remember that you REQUIRE one of these licenses to drive at ARMS AMP Lapping and Time Attack events!

The High Performance Driving School will take place starting with a evening classsroom session at 6:30pm Sunday May 20th at 100 Dispensing Way, Lower Sackville followed by an all day track session at Atlantic Motorsport Park on Monday May 21st. Entry fee is $200.00 which includes the Lapping card and/or Time Attack license for students who successfully complete the school. This course consists of a classroom session instructing students on the theory and physics of high performance driving as well as track safety and the following day consists entirely of on-track activities with small groups of students paired to experienced instructors.

The HPDS Students are required to bring the following:

- A safe street vehicle. If your vehicle can pass MVI its probably fine for the on-track sessions. Vehicles will be inspected for suitability (Brakes, Tires, etc) prior to the session. Convertible vehicles are NOT permitted without adequate rollover protection, most factory rollover protection is not enough so please check with the organizers. Please contact the organizers with questions regarding vehicle suitability. Students will be asked to complete a self-inspection checklist provided prior to the course.

- A Snell 2000M or newer ‘M’ rated helmet is acceptable, provided the car is not equipped with a roll cage or racing slicks. Cars with cages and/or slicks will require a Snell 2000+ ‘SA’ rated helmet. Helmets meeting the following FIA standards are also approved.

FIA 8860-2004
Snell 2000 SA / 2005 SA / 2010 SA/SAH
SFI Foundation 31.1A or 31.2A
British Standards Institution BS 6658-85 type A/FR

If you do not have access to a helmet please contact the organizers as loaner helmets may be arranged with advance notice.

Race Report

Provided by Brian Gay, ASCC Race Director:

2011 ASCC Year End Race Report

Another year is over and another successful race season has come to an end. While some people may ask how can it be successful while we always seem to be talking about race financial debt, even that was somewhat turned around mid season to become a positive with the generous support of a few financial donors for love of the sport.

Let’s look back on what helped to make this a successful year. To start with, the most obvious one is that we held a full season with 6 events. This alone was a success since there was talk at the previous year’s ARMS AGM to cancel races if there wasn’t enough interest. While the attendance at each event was far from stellar, the ones who did show up to support racing from their respected regions had a great day or two of racing. The year even started out with one of the largest race schools in a few years, with each and every student receiving their license and everyone continued on to complete a full season. The even better part is that they all plan to continue again next year. Mid-season we had the sponsorship money that I mentioned earlier which was successful in filling in some of the racing debt and keep us closer to the black. The race committee while not perfect was successful in dealing with the race season and everything it had to throw at them from money issues, car classification and rule adjustments that must be made to keep things running on track as smoothly as possible. And finally of course there was another great success in running the JCM which was organized by a few very dedicated individuals.

I think the year ended off on a good note with the August race weekend being the highest car count attendance all season. Maybe we will see this all the time next year. Shall we dare to dream? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting different results. The days of getting 25 race cars out to the track have long passed over the years, but I do believe that we are on our way back up again. There is no overnight sensation solution, but for the last 2 years that I have been Race director we are working on improving things. Change takes time, people need to be willing to embrace change as we move forward and let go of how we “used to do things.” Keep your minds open and your heart still loving the sport, let’s work together on everyone helping to make next season an even bigger success.
See you at the track!

Brian Gay
ASCC Race Director

All in favour of accepting the Race report.

Rally Report

Provided by Gordon Sleigh, ASCC Rally Director:

The Atlantic Sports Car Club’s 2011 Rally season began as usual with the Pearce-traditional January navigational rally. The 2011 Musquodobit Madness rally brought out 14 teams to the roads surrounding Elmsdale for a 209km night rally. Ian Pearce and Maria Discoll continue to organize the ARMS championship’s highest attended events and are already well into organizing the kickoff for the 2012 season.

Although only a single rally event was held by ASCC in 2011, many club members have been highly active in the rally community.

Ian Pearce, Maria Driscoll, finished out an extraordinary 2011 Navigational rally championship, taking home the Experienced Driver and Navigator trophies with NO penalty points for the entire 4 event series! ASCC members dominated the Novice championship as well with Jeremy Roberts and Donna Beattie taking home the top honors for Driver and Navigator in the Novice championship!

In addition to navigational rally a number of ASCC members participated in the continuing rebirth of Performance Rally in our region with a number of members competing in the BAC Rally/RallySprint series. A Number of ASCC members have also made the trip to Quebec and Ontario to provide assistance in stage operations at the Baie de Chaleurs and Rally of the Tall Pines National events.

We look forward to continued rally growth with ASCC members involved in all aspects of the discipline in 2012!

Gordon Sleigh

ASCC Secretary/Rally Director
ARMS Regional Rally Director

Some outstanding ARMS Rally trophies were delivered.

All were in favour of accepting the Rally report.

Solo Report

89 total competitors for the season, 250 total entries. Average of 20 competitors per event over the season.

A new lot with the Truro Power Centre was found for 2011 with some excellently attended events.

$500 overall loss for the season means a slight increase in event entry fees for 2012 will be required to $25.

Taylor proceeded to hand out Slalom awards.

A special ASCC plaque of appreciation was made up to be presented to the Millbrook First Nation for their help with the Truro Power Centre lot.

All were in favour of accepting the ASCC Solo report.

Old Business

The January ASCC meeting will be a social event held at Kartbahn, details will be forthcoming.

Debbie wanted to help Derek Clark for providing fundraising for AMP in the form of AMP windshield banners. Only a few are left and he has them for sale at the meeting.

New Business

ASCC has made a donation to Gerry Elliot to help with his MS treatment in Florida.

As usual ASCC is accepting Food Bank donations on behalf of the club. Brian Jarvis is collecting the donations (and cash) tonight.

Chris Ward motioned to ratify the actions of the election, Umberto LoPresti, no discussion, all in favour. Debbie thanks everyone for their endorsement.

Elections

George Sheppard sought nominations from the floor for the position of President. Debbie Miller has re-offered. Accepted by acclamation.

Swap Shop

George Sheppard has a number of vintage hardcover car books here to sell. $5 a piece.

Brian Jarvis has a tire rack from Tire Rack (substantially better than the Canadian Tire racks) for $100 which is quite a discount.

Mark MacLeod motioned to adjourn, Donna Beattie seconded. All in favor.
